Week 8 - Universal Joint
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy(They can all be found in the General Materials section) The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone. Use a refined mesh if possible for the academic license. You need to obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them. Submit a report regarding the same.
Case setup and execution:
1. open transient structural.
2. import the geometry.

3. open mechanical module. Assign material as structural steel for case 1,stainless steel for case 2 and titanium alloy for case 3 on joints with spring.
4. Delete all default contacts and insert joints as below.

5. Set analysis setting as shown

6. apply joint load:

7. set mesh size as 4 mm. set adaptive meshing to no and smoothing to medium. then mesh the model.
8. run the solution.
Result:
1. Case 1:
Equivalent stress;

Total deformation:

Case 2:
Equivalent stress

Total deformation

Case 3:
Equivalent stress

Total Deformation:

Conclusion:
| Case 1 | Case 2 | Case 3 | |
| Equivalent stress max (Mpa) | 1460.8 | 1413.4 | 715.8 |
| Max total deformation (mm) | 38.63 | 38.63 | 38.63 |
From table it can conclude that resistance offered by titanium alloy is lesser compared to structural steel and stainless steel.
