Challenge

Week 8 - Universal Joint

Universal Joint

AIM

To run the analysis for Universal Joint on a total of 3 different cases with change in material terms and provide the inference on the output.

Objective

To find and compare the results of Equivalent stress, directional deformation, Equivalent elastic strain, and contact pressure in all cases.

For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy(They can all be found in the General Materials section) The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone. Use a refined mesh if possible for the academic license. You need to obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them. Submit a report regarding the same.

CASE 1:Structural Steel

CASE 2:Stainless Steel

CASE 3:Titanium alloy

CASE 1:

Structural Steel

Import the model.

select the material.

Structural steel.

And open the model panel.

In connection panel connect

And delete the contact component

And create the joint

create the fixed joint

2nd revolute joint

ground to body

3rd revolute joint

body to ground

revolute joint

body to body to all 8 joint

Mesh the component with mesh option.

mesh the component with element size of 2mm.

Analysis setting

step = 5

with large deflection = ON

weak spring = program control

Auto time step = ON

Output control = ON

Create the joint rotation

CASE 2

Stainless Steel

structural steel.

Import the model.

select the material.

Strainless steel.

And open the model panel.

In connection panel connect

And delete the contact component

And create the joint

create the fixed joint

2nd revolute joint

ground to body

3rd revolute joint

body to ground

revolute joint

body to body to all 8 joint

Mesh the component with mesh option.

mesh the component with element size of 2mm.

Analysis setting

step = 5

with large deflection = ON

weak spring = program control

Auto time step = ON

Output control = ON

Create the joint rotation

CASE 3
