Week 8 - Universal Joint
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials to be used on the joint with the springs alone Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy.
Tool/Software: Ansys Workbench 2022R
Producer: Follow the steps in the video
Results:
Universal Joint_Case-1 (Structural Steel):
Equivalent Stress Maximum = 1706.455914 MPa
Total Deformation Maximum = 38.63703489 mm
Equivalent Stress 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 1706.455914 MPa
Total Deformation 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 23.85824003 mm
Universal Joint_Case-2 (Stainless Steel):
Equivalent Stress Maximum = 1652.101156 MPa
Total Deformation Maximum = 38.63703489 mm
Equivalent Stress 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 1652.101156 MPa
Total Deformation 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 23.85824381 mm
Universal Joint_Case-3 (Titanium alloy):
Equivalent Stress Maximum = 839.8564538 MPa
Total Deformation Maximum = 8.63703489 mm
Equivalent Stress 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 839.8564538 MPa
Total Deformation 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) = 23.85830741 mm
Comparison of three materials:
| Unit | (Structural Steel) | (Stainless Steel) | (Titanium alloy) | |
| Equivalent Stress 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) | MPa | 1706.455914 | 1652.101156 | 839.8564538 |
| Total Deformation 2 Maximum (Driven Yoke) | mm | 23.85824003 | 23.85824381 | 23.85830741 |
Conclusion:
The Titanium alloy is a low-stress material compared to other materials in this application.
