Week 8 - Universal Joint

Objective: To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using:

  1. Case 1: Structural Steel for the joint with the spring.
  2. Case 2: Stainless Steel for the joint with the spring.
  3. Case 3: Titanium Alloy for the joint with the spring.

Procedure:

  1. Joints (1 To 5):
  2. Joints (6 To 10):
  3. Joints (11):
  4. Meshing (2 mm):
  5. Boundary Conditions:

Analysis:

  1. Case 1:
    1. Total Deformation:
    2. Equivalent Stress:
  2. Case 2:
    1. Total Deformation:
    2. Equivalent Stress:
  3. Case 3:
    1. Total Deformation:
    2. Equivalent Stress:

Result:

Cases Total Deformation (mm) Equivalent Stress (MPa)
Maximum Minimum Maximum Minimum
Case 1 38.637 0 1473.3 9.3756×10^-6
Case 2 38.637 0 1428.6 9.022×10^-6
Case 3 38.637 0 729.67 4.7703×10^-6

Conclusion: The total deformation remains the same in all the cases implying that it is independent of material properties. The equivalent stress is greatest in case 1, lesser in case 2 and least in case 3. It depends on material properties of the components.
