Week 8 - Simulation of a backward facing step in OpenFOAM
Objective: To simulate an incompressible-laminar-viscous flow through the backward-facing step geometry.
Procedure in OpenFoam:
- using 'tut' in the terminal we access the tutorial folder and we select the required type of simulation in this case we used incompressible flow simulation.
- Based on the flow we select icoFoam and in that cavity, the problem was selected and was copied to the run folder.
- Now we redirect to the run folder where we access the copied folder.
- on opening the copied folder we have mainly three sub folders namely '0', 'System', and 'constant'.
- '0': contain the value of the initial condition in this case we have velocity and pressure.
- 'system' contains
- 'BlockmeshDict: Geometrical and mesh information
- ControlDict: solver time and solution storage intervals.
- Fvsolutions: Instruction to solve discretized linear equation
- Fvschemes: Assign discretization schemes for primitive variables in governing equation.
- 'Constant' contain
- 'Polymesh': Contain geometrical and mesh info.
- 'transport properties': transport coefficients needed to solve the governing equation.
- 'turbulence properties': info on turbulent coefficient and moled used in the simulation.
Case 1: Simulate the flow without using any grading factor (i.e., GF = 1)

- The geometry was divided into 5 blocks and each of the vertices other than overlapping vertices of the blocks were inputted.
- Simple grading was mainly used to define the mesh and the ratio to which the mesh should be stretched.
- we can check for the built mesh with the help of blockMesh.

- As we are solving for incompressible flow we solve the incompressible momentum and continuity equation thus we use icoFoam here.
- Here we specify the start and end time also the time step for the simulation.
- The interval for storing the results is mentioned here.

Conclusion:
Transient simulation of incompressible laminar viscous flow on backward step facing was conducted.
Two cases were studied one without a grading factor and one with a grading factor of 0.2.
From the two simulations, no significant changes were found. The behavior of velocity contour does not change with the grading factor, but we can see a distorted curve region with a grading factor of 0.2 compared to the other case.
