Challenge

Week 8 - Simulation of a backward facing step in OpenFOAM

In this challenge, we are going to simulate an incompressible-laminar-viscous flow through the backward facing step geometry.

Case 1 - Simulate the flow without using any grading factor (i.e., GF = 1)

Case 2 - Simulate the flow with grading factor of 0.2. The cells should be finer near the walls (includig the step wall).

Case from the tutorial -incompressible-cavity is copied. Then the blockmesh is edited according to the given problem.

Velocity profile at x=0.085m without grading facor

Velocity profile at x=0.085m with grading factor

As we can see from the plot because of sudden change in area with grading factor velocity change is significant , if we further reduce mesh size it will approach towards accurate but computational time will increase.

Growth factor is used to fine the mesh at the required location to capture the change in proporties at that location.
