Week 8 - Simulating Cyclone separator with Discrete Phase Modelling

Separation efficiency and pressure drop

Separation Efficiency: it is defined ratio of concentration that has been removed from the feed stream to the initial concentration in the feed stream. Here it is the ratio of particles being trapped to the total number of tracked particles.

Separation efficiency, =

Pressure drop: pressure drop or pressure difference between inlet pressure to the outlet pressure, here it pressure difference between inlet pressure and top outlet pressure (since top outlet opening is kept at escape option), whereas the bottom outlet is kept at trapped.

Case1: keeping velocity at 3 m/s and changing the particulate diameter from 5 micro meter to 1 micro meter.

Conclusion

  • Separation efficiency depends on both diameter of particles and velocity of particle, since as the both the velocity and diameter of particles are varied, change in separation is observed.
  • As the diameter of particles and its velocity is increased the separation efficiency is increased, but the effect of velocity has more influence on separation efficiency compared to particles diameter separated.

Pressure difference is depended on velocity, for constant with varying the size of diameter the pressure drop remains almost constant
