Week 8 - Challenge 6 - Core & Cavity Design

AIM

Create the Core and cavity blocks for the switch bezel design.

CORE AND CAVITY DESIGN

CORE DESIGN

The core is the male part which forms the internal shape of molding. The movable side of the mold , convex part of the mold is the core.

Class A ,B and C surface used to design the core block of switch bezel.Trim the class A with class C .Then trim with class B surface (outer portion of component required). The out put is the componenet with parting surface.(fig .1.)

fig.1. component with parting surface

Then create a sketch for core block .switch bezel should be inside the skech and extrude in the tooling axis direction .finally trim the component with parting surface and fill to generate the core block.(fig.2)

CAVITY DESIGN

The cavity is the female part which forms external shape of molding.where the concave part of the mold is the cavity .Molten plastic enters to the fixed part of the mold.

Class B surface is used to generate the cavity block .Create a sketch for cavity block .The switch bezel should be inside the sketch .finally extruded sketch trim with B surface and fill to generate the cavity side of the mold .

PARTING SURFACE

Generally Injection Mold has 2 components: the Movable Halves and the Fixed Halves.

During Injection Molding process, these 2 halves are pressed tightly and form a sealed hollow to avoid melt flow leakage and maintain certain holding pressure, the pressed surface is called parting surface .

The parting surface design directly affects the product quality, ease of construction and operation of the injection mold.

PARTING SURFACE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Design the injection mold structure as simple as possible
  • Ease of de-molding
  • dimentional accuracy of the molded part
  • Ensure the appearence requirement of the part.parting surface shouldnot be on the high quality surface
  • Ensure adequate venting

In this design parting surface on the B suface. so it will not affects the appearence of the product.(fig 4.)

PARTING LINE

parting line in the mould or product which divides the two half, the core and the cavity of a molded part.

The intersction of joined class A and C with the class B surface is the parting line

CONCLUSION

Core and cavity blocks for the switch bezel design created successfully.
