Week 8-Challenge
3D Meshing of Housing & Chassis assembly
AIM:
To Understand and learn the 3D meshing technique, apply them for housing and chassis assembly model.
INTRODUCTION :
Chassis is also known as Vechile frame. It is the main supporting structure to which all other compoents are attached. It also deals with static and dynamic loads without deflection.
Types of 3D Meshing
- Tetra meshing
- Hexa Meshing
Tetra meshing is widely prefereed in industry because it is easy to mesh complex geometry.
Hexa meshing is not preferred, since they are difficult to perform. Beacuse of its better shape function it gives back better results for analysis compared to tetra mesh.
PROCEDURE:
There are three different ways to perform 3D tetra meshing
1) Meshing the surface with 2D trias element and coverting to 3D tetra meshing.
2) Directly form 3D panel using Volume tera
3) By using utility bar from View - Browser - Hypermesh - Utility
Chassis Assembly:
Meshing the surface with 2D trias element and coverting to 3D tetra meshing.
This method is considered when quality comes into picture.
1) Use Defeature option from Geometry Panel to remove fillets.
2) Select the surfaces and give the min & max radius between which fillets have to be removed and hit find button.
3) After finding the surfaces hit the remove button to remove the fillets.
4) After defeaturing the component, clean up the geometry using from Geom panel using quick edit or by pressing F11 button.
5) After geometry clean up, mesh the surface with 2D trias elements.
6) Now convert the 2D tria elemets into 3D tetra elements as mentioned below.
7) Inside tertamesh panel, select the elements option under Fixed trias/quads to tetra mesh and hit mesh button.
8) For quality of 3D meshing oncentrate on tet collape. Use Tools - check elems or F10 button.
9) To fix quality issue use translate option to work individually on every elements.
Directly form 3D panel using Volume tera
1) For this method, use tetramesh option from geom panel.
2) Select the solids or surfs to whichh volume mesh have to be done.
3) To give Quality parameters like Min, Max tetra mesh size & tet collapse, use teramesh parameters. Make sure to check in fill voids, fix midnodes, smoothing.
By using utility bar from View - Browser - Hypermesh - Utility
This method is used when quality is not considered for meshing.
1) For this method use View - Browsers - Hypermesh - Utility option.
2) From Utility choose Geom/Mesh and under mesh tools select quick tetra mesh as shown below.
3) Select the components and change the type of mesh to trias and hit mesh button. This option automatically meshes the surface to 2D and convert them into 3D tetra mesh.
Results:
Meshing the surface with 2D trias element and coverting to 3D tetra meshing
Directly form 3D panel using Volume tera
By using utility bar from View - Browser - Hypermesh - Utility
CONCLUSION:
Thus the 3D meshing technique has done successfully to the housing and chassis assembly with the tet collapse 0.15 and element size of 5mm.
