Week 6- Challenge
MESH GENERATION OF HOOD
INTRODUCTION:
Hood consists of Different sections like
1) Latch
2) Hinge reinforcement
3) Inner & Outer body
Hood covers the engine of automobiles and allows us to access the engines for maintenance and repair. Hood hoses engine, battery, coolant, washer liquid for wind screen, air cleaner, spark plug, radiator fan etc. It is also called as Bonnet.
AIM:
The ultimate aim of this project is to learn the meshing techniques and their applications, Quality criteria like min & max element size and quad, tria min & max angle, warpage, aspect ratio, warpage etc. & Tria management criteria.
PROCEDURE:
The following three procedures were followed to acheive a complete mesh flow of the hood structure.
1) Midsurface extraction
2) Topology clean up
3) Mesh generation
From Preferences - Criteria File Settings, fill the Quality criteria for the quality test of the surfaces meshed.
LATCH REINFORCEMENT:
MIDSURFACE EXTRACTION:
1) Delete the solid part of latch & extract the midsurface of the latch part of the hood using Geometry - Midsurface - auto midsurface.
TOPOLOGY CLEAN UP:
1) Change to topo mode by selecting the drop down above the command window to perform geometry clean up.
Tools Utilised:
1) Toggle edge
2) Unsplit surf
Note: To perform geometry clean up change to wireframe mode if necessary to work on.
MESH GENERATION:
Tools Utilised:
1) automesh
2) Replace
1) Mesh the generated midsurface using 2D - automesh or simply pressing F12 key.
2) Make sure to change the elemet size to 5mm
3) While meshing the midsurface, mesh surface by surface individually to pass in quality test.
4) After meshing concentrate on trias and fix it by remeshing again.
5) Work on the like highlighted mesh flow by using replace option.
HINGE REINFORCEMENT:
MIDSURFACE EXTRACTION:
1) Extract the midsurface of hinge component using the same geometry - midsurface - automidsurface
TOPOLOGY CLEAN UP:
1) After extracting midsurface check for the geometry clean up for the hinge component.
Tools Utilised:
1) Toggle edge
2) Unsplit surf
3) Replace & retain points
Replace & Retain points
1) Select the points which have to be replaced.
2) Select the points as shown below to retain.
MESH GENERATION:
Tools utilised:
1) automesh
2) Replace
3) Distance
5) Duplicate
6) Reflect
1) After geometry clean up, mesh the hinge part surface by surface as shown in the below representation.
2) Below image represents the mesh construction surface by surface.
3) After meshing completely, since they are symmetric we can mirror the mesh of hinge to other side.
4) For this use Distance option and find the node at center of the hole as shown below.
5) Similarly capture the center node of the hole on the other side of the hinge and finally capture the center node between hinge component as shown below.
6) Make duplicate of the meshed surface using duplicate option
7) Using Tool - Reflect option to mirror the meshed surface into the other hinge.
NOTE: While using reflect option make sure you duplicate the meshed surface only once & keep an eye on axis to reflect.
OUTER BODY
MIDSURFACE EXTRACTION:
1) Extract the midsurface of outer body using automesh option.
2) Since they are symmetric we delete the one half of the midsurface.
TOPOLOGY CLEAN UP:
Tools utilised:
1)Toggle edge
2) Unsplit surf
3) split surf - node
4) split surf - line
1) After extracting midsurface of outer body, perform topology clean up on one half of the outer body, so that it can reflected at last.
2) The below image describes the geometry clean up at hemming part of outer body.
3) Make geometry clean up for our convenience in such a way it avoids sharp corners.
4) Make sure the highlighted one is connected correctly as shown in below 2 images.
5) The final geometry cleaned up model is below.
MESH GENERATION:
Tools utilised:
1) automesh
2) Replace
3) Distance
5) Duplicate
6) Reflect
1) Generate mesh for one side of the outer body by selecting each surface individually. The final meshed surface is below
2) After meshing reflect both the component and midsurface of the outer body.
Component Reflecting:
Use Tool - Reflect to get the mirrored component. Here Green, Blue, red & Maroon color nodes represents N1, N2, N3 & Base respectively.
Midsurface reflecting:
Similarly reflect the elements in the meshed area post duplicating the meshed surface. Here Green, Blue, red & Maroon color nodes represents N1, N2, N3 & Base respectively.
INNER BODY
MIDSURFACE GENERATION:
1) Generate midsurface of the inner body using geometry - midsurface - automidsurface.
TOPOLOGY CLEAN UP:
Tools utilised:
1)Toggle edge
2) Unsplit surf
3) split surf - node
4) split surf - line
1) Delete the symmetric part of inner body. The below image represents the toggled view of symmetric part of inner body.
MESH GENERATION:
Tools utilised:
1) automesh
2) Replace
3) Distance
5) Duplicate
6) Reflect
1) Generate mesh for one side of the inner body by selecting each surface individually. The final meshed surface is below.
2) After meshing each surface whether it is inner & outer body or hinge & latch, quality criteria is checked for every component and confirmed.
Component Reflecting:
Use Tool - Reflect to get the mirrored component.
Midsurface reflecting:
Similarly reflect the elements in the meshed area post duplicating the meshed surface as shown below.
RESULT:
Thus meshinng of each and every surface has been completed and the meshed surfaces with quality check are below.
MESHED LATCH SURFACE:
MESHED HINGE SURFACE:
