Week 8 - Challenge 3 - Coin Holder Design

AIM

Create the Coin Holder Plastic component through the given Class-A surface. To begin with, the tooling axis for the given Class-A Surface should be created meeting the requirements of the draft angle and at the end perform the Draft analysis on the model.

Take the Thickness of the component to be 2.5 mm

TOOLING AXIS FOR GIVEN CLASS A  SURFACE

First create a tooling axis for the given class A surface .In this direction the mold opens and closes .first considering the  inclined surface and holes .

In this case y axis is consider as the tooling direction .create an intersection along yz plane.Draw the lines along inclined surfaces .using bisecting method to create the tooling axis clearing z direction. This is the main toolig axis

fig 1 .main tooling axis (yellow dotted line)

DRAFT ANALYSIS OF CLASS A SURFACE

Check the draft analysis of the given class A surface along the tooling direction to ensure the part has minimum draft angle (3 degree) in all faces .

fig .2. draft analysis of class A surface

CLASS B SURFACE

Class b surface created from the class A  surface .Extract the required surfaces from the class A surface , untrim ,extrapolate and offset in to required thickness .finally trim the surfaces to get the class B surface .proper  fillet values  given to the edges

                                                           fig.3 class B sueface

CLASS C SURFACE

Class C surface connecting the class A and B surfaces. In this case Extracting the boundary of class A surface and using the swept with reference surface to create the class C surface. In addition Extracting the reference surfaces , swept in the appropriate angle (90 degree to the reference surface ),direction and length to get the class C surface.

                                                                fig 4 Class C surface

  • Then trim  the class B surface with class C surface
  • Finally join the class A surface  to get the closed body of coin holder.

fig 5. closed body of coin holder

  • The solid body created using close surface feature on part design

fig .6. soild body of coin holder

DRAFT ANALYSIS OF FINAL  SOLID BODY

Use the draft analysis to check the final product has minimum draft angle.

here all the surface has draft angle above 3 degree  and  bottom side shows negative draft (blue colour ) .draft analysis shown in fig 7.

fig 7 . draft analysis of final soild body

CONCLUSION

Coin Holder Plastic component created using the  given Class-A surface.Draft analysis performed on the final solid model.
