Week 8

Skill-lync assignment (week 8)

Aim: The objective of this assignment is to practice various morphing techniques on the given component.

Procedure: The summary of steps here is less of a sequence of actions and more of a collection of various procedures performed.

  1. The geometry is imported into the ANSA workspace.

  1. The geometry is then checked for errors and any found are fixed via auto-fix and topo option.
  2. In the morph deck, the boxes>new>ortho is used to select a section of the geometry as shown below.

  1. The height of the given section is increased via the box morphing>move option and selecting the y-axis direction for movement. The process is shown below.

  1. A second morphing box is split into 4 sections via the boxes>split option, as shown below.

  1. A section was enlarged via the boxes>move>scale option.

  1. Another section was moved ahead via the translate tab of the move section.

Learning outcomes: Since the video on morphing available on the Skill-lync site primarily covers very few morph options, not many of those have been used in this assignment.

  • The orthogonal morph box was demonstrated to modify any section of the given geometry. By moving the nodes of the box, the geometry can be altered freely in several ways.
  • The move option offers control on the precise operations that is desired for the geometry within the box. Free movement, translation and scale modification was performed. These operations require knowledge on the parameters as well as coordinates, in order to get a proper result.
  • Since there was no specific target geometry, there was no requirement for any specific morphing operations that were mandatory. Also, the morph box and the move options and similar options are apparently the only major option that are required. So, remaining options that might be required for more exotic geometry manipulations were not practiced.
  • In industry, morphing is used as a more efficient alternative to CAD model modification via 3D modelling software. Jaguar Land Rover UK has used ANSA morphing in the design optimization of battery packs for the Evoque-e project (aimed at development of electric/hybrid propulsion system for vehicles). The morphing tool helped to make iterative changes to the battery pack until optimal design for its mounting points was reached.

Conclusion: Morphing has been practiced in this assignment. Translation, magnification, and free form modification are the options that were demonstrated.
