Week 6-Meshing of Hood Challenge

Objective: To mesh the Hood component by following the below-mentioned quality criteria.

Target Element Length = 5 Units

S.No Quality Criteria Value
1 Aspect Ratio 5
2 Skewness 45
3 Warping 15
4 Taper 0.5
5 Min. Length 2 Units
6 Max. Length 8 Units
7 Min angle Quad 45
8 Max angle Quad 135
9 Min angle Tria 20
10 Max angle Tria 120
11 Tria % 10

CAD model:

A Car's hood consists of 4 main parts. Hood Outer panel, Hood Inner panel, Hinge Reinforcements, and Latch&Hinge Reinforcements. The Hood Outer panel is joined to the inner panel by a process called Hemming. The reinforcements are placed between the outer and inner panels.

Procedure:

  • Import the STEP file using the "Import Geometry" option from the Import menu.
  • Delete the solids leaving behind the 2D shell surfaces.
  • Extract mid surfaces by Geometry>midsurface (skin offset).
  • Keep these mid surfaces separately for each component.
  • Cleanup the geometry on these extracted mid surfaces.
  • Tools in Geometry>Quickedit are helpful for geometry cleanup.
  • Mesh the components by using the Automesh option in the 2D panel.
  • Edit mesh density to obtain a better mesh pattern and to avoid rotating quads and also to minimize the number of tria elements.
  • Set target element size to 5 and check the quality of the mesh from the quality criteria tab.
  • Cleanup tools in the quality criteria tab are sufficient enough in clearing the failed elements.
  • For Symmetrical components, mesh half portion and reflect the mesh by Tools>Reflect.
  • Tools>edges>equivalence helps remove free edges between the reflected mesh elements.
  • Make sure that the meshed component has no free edges by using Tools>edges>free edges.
  • At hemmed region, toogle the lines above and below the midline of the hemmed surface.
  • Create a property card and material card to assign thickness for the components.
