Week 6.1 - Setting up a model

CHALLENGE: SETTING UP CASE TO SOLVE FORCED CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER IN ELECTRONICS CABINET.

CAD CLEAN UP:

1. The geometry have been visually analyzed to perform cad cleanup. insignificant components have been identified and removed.

2. Outer cover have been removed as it dont have important components and replaced with enclosure.

3. Small components which is not important under the board have been removed as it increase mesh count.

4. The above model is final geometry, which is to be analyzed.

MESH:

1. The HD mesh have been generated with superior quality to ensure convergence.

2. The Non-conformal mesh have been generated to reduce mesh bleeding and control quality parameters around cylindrical bodies.

3. The geometry has CAD objects to capture them efficiently Multi Level meshing have been used with buffer layer.

4. The mesh have been created with quality of 0.27 face alignment and 0.05 for skewness. those values are far better for convergence as per ICEPAK guide.

CASE SETUP:

1. The heat generation of 100 watts have been defined to processor covered by fins.

2. 20W of heat generation have been defined to sources in CAD panel.

3. 5m/s have been defined for internal flow.

4. Equations are solved for flow and temperature, radiation is switched off.

5. Problem is solved for steady state case.

6. Residuals displayed a good convergence. and solutions converged at 189iteration.

POST PROCESSING:

Figure 01: Temperature contour of Heat sinks with max temperature of 162deg

1. Image shows the temperature distribution in Heat sinks and indicates minimum temperature due to direct airflow over it

Figure 2: Particles trackings for velocity from fan

2. The image shows fluid flow streamlines in cabinet which shows improper distribution of flow in cabinet which gives rise hotspots of max temperature 162deg.

Figure 3: Temperature contour for whole geometry

3. Image shows temperature contours for the whole cabinet with highest temperature in CAD model with4heat source as there is no mode of proper cooling.

Figure 4: Velocity vectors from fan

4. The above image shows velocity vectors from fan. it signifies that flow is concentrated only in heat sinks. it is the reason for increase in temperature in CAD model with heat sources.

Recommendations:

1. Openings is not sufficient to promote proper airflow which will allow hot air to leave outside cabinet. More number of openings has to be incorporated.

2. Heat sinks has to be added to CAD model with 5 heat source to increase heat transfer area.
