Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Objective

To perform a sphere pressing simulation using Ansys workbench and to find out the plastic deformation.

Procedure

  • A new static structural tab was dragged onto the workbench. From the geometry tab, the given model was imported into it. Geometry was opened in the space claim and checked for any abnormality.
  • Here the structural steel material was chosen for the sphere and structural steel NL for the plate. These materials were added from the engineering data tab.
  • Now mechanical module was opened for giving further definitions.
  • From the geometry option, the parts were renamed and also assigned the material corresponding to the part.
  • All the default contacts were deleted and a manual contact was defined between the sphere and the plate with a frictional coefficient of 0.74

  • Symmetry was assigned to the faces along the x and z-axis respectively by right-clicking model>Insert>Symmetry.
  • For meshing the model, an element size of 0.8mm was used for both parts.

  • From the analysis setup, four steps were assigned and other changes made are shown below.

  • Now the boundary conditions were defined. The bottom face of the plate was fixed.

  • To provide the displacement of 4mm the face of the sphere was selected as shown below and a displacement value along y-direction was provided.

  • Finally from the solution tab, the outputs for equivalent stress, equivalent strain, and directional deformation were requested.

Results

  • A simulation of the pressing of a sphere onto the plate 4mm downwards and retracting back has been performed and the results obtained are shown below.

Equivalent stress

  • The maximum equivalent stress is found to be 3525.3MPa which is at the top face of the plate.

Directional deformation(Y-axis) for the plate

  • The maximum value for the directional deformation (Y-axis) is found to be 0.33145mm.

Conclusion

  • From the sphere pressing simulation, it can be seen that when the sphere presses the plate, it deforms, and when the sphere gets retracted back to the original position the deformation still exists which shows that the plate has undergone plastic deformation and also the maximum value of the stress we got from the simulation is more than that of the yield stress which shows the plasticity.
