Challenge

TETRA MESHING OF SOLID COMPONENT USING HYPER-MESH

OBJECTIVE 1:

To create Tetramesh for Housing model according to given criteria.

Criteria: Elements sizes: Min- 2mm, Target- 5mm,Max- 7mm, Tet collapse: 0.15

PROCEDURE:

  • A Hyperworks file was opened with Optistruct as user profile and CAD model of housing is then imported into the workpage.
  • View the model in Topoloy mode and delete all the solids from the part.
  • Since the model contains two parts, Seperate collector were assigned for each by using organize tool from the Tool panel and choose one part and make it as our current component.
  • Now the model is checked for any topology repair such as free edges, missing surfaces etc and features such as filletes, pin holes etc are then defeatured accordingly to avoid failure of elements while meshing.
  • Split the surface accordingly to get a good mesh and also to avoid failure of elements after meshing.
  • For creating a 3D mesh, The surface of the geometry is mesh with 2D elements initially and then its been covetred to 3D tetra elements. This method will provide a good quality control over the mesh rather than meshing directly from the 3D panel.
  • 2D mesh was created using Automesh tool with Target element size as 5mm and tria element type was selected for meshing.
  • The elements were checked for quality cirteria using check element tool (F10) and any paramenters which are not in the range of the entered value will get highlated and correction has to be made further.
  • Free edges were also checked for the elements because 3D mesh wont be created if there is any free edges present and also for the transfer of force between the elements.
  • After finishing 2D meshing the component was meshed with 3D elements using tetra mesh tool from 3D panel.
  • Mask tool (F5) was used to see wheather the 3D elements were created or not.
  • Here the elements created was checked for 'Tet collapse' (Defect generated when the heght of the tetrahedron 3D element is less than the target element size).
  • If any tet collapse is present, Its been removed by Remeshing the elements again and again and also by using the Distance tool (F4).
  • Same procedure was followed to mesh the other component as well.
  • Save the file.

OBJECTIVE 2:

To create tetramesh for crank hub and Chassis assembly.

Criteria: Target element size: 6mm, Tet collapse: 0.15

MESHING CRANK HUB

PROCEDURE:

  • A new hypermesh file was opened with optistruct as user profile and the CAD model of crank hub is imported into the workpage.
  • The meshing procedure for this model is same as that of Housing model as we did ealier.
  • 3D mesh with Target element 6mm can be meshed directly from the 3D panel by using 'Volume tetra' option from tetra mesh tool and thereafter checking the tetcollapse.
  • This method is preffered when quality control over the mesh is not needed.
  • Here the model was meshed with 2D elements first and then converted it into 3D tetra elements in order to have a good control over the mesh. The criteria for min and max lenght used was same that of the above model.
  • Save the file.

MESHING CHASSIS ASSEMBLY

  • A new hyperworks file was opened with Optistruct as user profile and the CAD model of Chassis asembly is imported into the work page.
  • Since the model has got symmetricity, Half of the portion was meshed and then reflected back to the other side.
  • The meshing procedure followed was same as that of above.
  • The Assembly contains different parts which are then organised to different collectors each by using the oraganise tool from Tool panel.
  • After that each component was worked individually.
  • The given CAD model contained lots of overlapping surfaces and free edges and was repaired manually by translating (F4) the sufaces and using other tools.

Damaged surface

Correction made

  • Some of the surfaces has been defeatured so the it wont fail the quality criteria.
  • For meshing this model the same procedure was followed like the model meshed above.
  • After meshing all the componenets individually and checking the Tet collapse, its been reflected to the other side using reflect tool from Tool panel.
  • Save the file.

RESULTS:

The given CAD model has been meshed with 3D elements according to the quality criteria.

CONCLUSION:

From this challanges ive learned more about meshing 3D elements.
