Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

REPORT

SPHERE PRESSING ON A PLATE

OBJECTIVE

To perform the analysis to stimulate a sphere pressing on a plate and to capture the plastic deformation occurred on plate.

PROCEDURE

To perform this simulation, we simplify the region to reduce computational time. Since the model is symmetric we can mirror it to get the result for whole geometry.

We consider one fourth of the model an it is loaded in mechanical GUI.

For the sphere we use structural steel as material, the properties of the material is shown below,

For plate we use structural steel NL as material and the properties are shown below,

The contact between plate and sphere is frictional and frictional coefficient is 0.74 that is obtained from Roy mech useful tribology tables.

Default mesh is used for this analysis.

ANALYSIS SETTING

The simulation is running through 4 steps and set the large deflection ON.

STATIC STRUCTURAL

The plate is fixed.

The sphere is pressed 4mm downwards into the plate and retract it.

RESULTS

THE DEFORMATION IN Y DIRECTION

THE EQUIVALENT STRESS ON THE PLATE

THE ELASTIC STRAIN ON THE PLATE

THE ELASTIC STRAIN ON THE SPHERE

CONCLUSION

The simulation is successfully completed and the results are plotted above. A little strain is also developed in sphere also.

The deformation on the plate is plastic because after retracting the sphere the plate is still deformed and it is evident in the animation submitted along with the model.
