Challenge

Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Sphere pressing on flat plate

Objective:

In this challenge we have to perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate by using structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate is non-linear. Press the sphere on to the plate 4mm downward and retract it.

Procedure:

First, we have to input the engineering materials with required properties or else by creating the required properties.

Structural steel:

Structural steel non-linear:

Then we have to import our model into ANSYS workbench and open it to verify the geometry, if it is perfect then open model.

Right click the model and select the symmetry and again right click the symmetry and select the symmetry regions twice because the model is divided by 4 times.

Contacts:

Delete the previous contacts and assign the new manual contact region.

Meshing:

Analysis setting:

Fixed joint:

Displacement:

Result and conclusion:

Directional deformation:

Equivalent elastic strain:

Equivalent elastic stress:

As the sphere is loading and unloading on the plate, during unloading the plate is not regaining its original position means it is not in its elastic region, the plate deformed into plastic regain so that, it won’t regain into its original position.
