Week 2 Railwheel and Track
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF RAILWHEEL AND TRACK SIMULATION
Objective:- to simulate the rail wheel and track assembly to find stresses , deformation and life cycle. Comparison is also made for different types of bearing loads. User defined results are also compared with the original results.
Case 1:- the bearing load is multiplied by 5 times and the results are compared with the one with load of 100000N. The total deformation , equivalent stress and life under both the loads are compared.
Case 2:- a user defined result is implemented and the total deformation is calculated from the result and checked if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result ANSYS for the load of 100000N
PROCEDURE:-
Material :- structural steel

Model:-

Contacts: contacts has been applied between wheel and track and between wheel and shaft.

Joints:- fixed , translation and planar joints has been applied to the track, shaft and wheel.

Loads:- a bearing load acts on the shaft which ultimately acts on the wheel. The load given to the wheel is actually the portion of the load of the carriage acting on each shaft.
Case1:-
bearing load of 100000N in downward direction i.e -100000N in negative y direction as per the coordinate system.

bearing load of 500000N in downward direction i.e -500000N in negative y direction as per the coordinate system.

MESHING:-
The mesh size is kept at 50mm and a face sizing is inserted of size 35mm to refine the size and capture the results accurately.

User defined results:-

bearing load of 500000N:-
Equivalent stress:-

Life:-

Total deformation:-

Conclution:-
Case1:- it is seen that when the bearing load has been increased to 5 times , the equivalent stress has increased by approx. 400MPa and the life of the rail wheel has reduced to very less cycles from 1e6 max. to 1077.7 min., when compared to 100000N which is 1e6 max. to 1.4049e5 min.
Hence when bearing load has to be increased, changes should be made to the design of rail wheel , such as increasing the factor of safety, considering the high quality material with high strength and should be designed for ultimate life. The vibrations should be made less during operation.
Case2:- the user defined results for bearing load of 100000N is almost similar to the total deformation.
