Challenge

Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Objective of challenge: To perform the simulation of a sphere pressing on a plate by applying Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear. By pressing the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it, find out the plastic deformation.

Simulation setup configuration as follows:

1. Model as follows

2. Part names are specified as

3. Material applied for Sphere is "Structural steel" and for Plate is "Structure steel NL".

4. Symmetry region applied as follows

5. Manual connection configured, Frictional - Sphere to plate.

6. Mesh size for Sphere and Plate is 1mm.

7. Analysis settings configured as shown in below image.

8. In static structural "Fixed support" is applied to bottom of plate.

9. In static structural "Displacement" is applied at top of sphere.

Simulation results are as follows:

Description Simulation Results
Directional Deformation in the Y axis 3.3884 mm
Equivalent stress for the whole setup Max 3302.2 Mpa
Equivalent Plastic strain Max 1.7487 mm
Equivalent Elastric strain Max 0.016515 mm
Conclusion By pressing the sphere on to the plate by 4mm downwards and after retracting it, Plastic deformation obtained is "3.71745mm"
