Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

OBJECTIVE :

Perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.

Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear.

Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by you

CASE SETUP AND EXECUTION :

1. Import the geometry.

2. assign Plate material as structural steel NL and sphere material as structural steel.

3. In this model , since 2 planes of symmetry is there we have used quarter of the model. Create symmetry.

4.create frictional contact between sphere and plate as shown below.

5. Generate mesh with element size 0.5 mm

6. Set the analysis setting as shown below.

7. To prevent the Plate from moving downwards, provide the fixed support to the bottom of the plate.

8. Now the sphere has to press down the plate by 4mm. Also to observe the platic deformation the sphere has to be removed from contact. Displacement is given to sphere as shown below.

9. Solve.

Result & Conclusion

Displacement plot

Plastic deformation is 3.4 mm

Though the sphere was displaced by 4 mm, on removing the sphere from contact ,the plate regained some amount of deformation and a permanent deformation(plastic deformation ) is observed to be 3.4 mm
