Challenge

Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly

Aim

  • To check for the geometrical errors and delete surfaces which are unwanted for Surface wrap
  • To merge all the three models to perform surface wrap

Theory

Surface wrapping is a process of converting a 3D figure into 2D measurements to reduce the complexity of modelling. However, the problems with surface wrapping of a 3D figure with 2D surface comes with the problems of intersection at certain edges. It can primarily be used for non-complicated figures where there is no duplicate surfaces and multi-layered detail of input. Formation of a water-tight shell is necessary to complete the wrapping that can then be meshed as per given input

Procedures and Results

Step 1: Loading initial geometry of each given component

i. Engine

ii. Transmission

iii. Gear box

Step 2: Deletion of unnecessary elements and cleaning up geometrical errors

i. Engine

ii. Tranmission

iii. Gear box

Step 3: Creating assembly and executing surface wrap

i. Model assembly

a) Merging of Geometric model of tranmission

b) Post-merge condition

c) Merging the geometric model of Gear box

d) Post-merge condition

ii. Specifying the wrap parameters (target length = 5mm)

iii. Deletion of unnecessary PIDs

a) Open PIDs

b) Compress PIDs

c) Assigning PID's for surface wrapping

iv. Starting Surface wrap with Run command

v. Completion of surface wrap generation and rendering file

Conclusion

  • The present file has been generated by following given inputs of surface meshing and volume meshing (In areas of computational problems, self-specified measurements have been takent to execute the given tasks)
  • The challenge has been helpful to understand the concepts and instructions to be followed while generating surface wrap
  • Exploring certain tools in the ANSA TOPO deck and MESH deck have been included here such as Merge and Wrap
  • Critical geometric errors containing Single CONS and triple CONS error have been witnessed here
  • The file attached with the report contain completed surface wrap generation of the given components (Google drive link of the file attached below)
