Challenge

Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly

AIM:

For the engine, gearbox and transmission models, check for the geometrical errors and delete surfaces which are unwanted for Surface wrap. After clearing geometry, Merge all 3 models and perform surface wrap.

Target length for Wrap = 3 mm

OBJECTIVE:

  1. Delete the unwanted surfaces from all individual models.
  2. Merge all parts so that a watertight geometry is obtained.
  3. Apply Surface wrap with target length of 3mm.

PROCEDURE:

TOPOLOGICAL CLEANUP

  1. Open engine model
  2. Delete all extra ring features lying outside the engine model and also unnecessary ring features from the engine model using DELETE option.
  3. All geometric checks completed and all collapsed cons removed from engine surface.
  4. Open Gearbox model and delete all extra ring features lying outside the model and also unnecessary ring features from the model using DELETE option.
  5. Open transmission model and delete triple con features lying outside the geometry visible for surface wrap.
  6. Now open Engine model and fill all holes using New-coon-options for surface wrapping.
  7. Delete all thin elements like belts for proper surface wrapping.

MERGING

  1. Now open file option from the ribbons and select merge and select Transmission model.
  2. Now again select file option from the ribbons and select merge and select Gearbox model.
  3. Now check for holes in whole merged model and fill all holes.

SURFACE WRAPPING

  1. Select Mesh from classic mesh deck and Select Elements and long press on wrap option. Select constant wrap.
  2. Give name as fullwrap and set target length as 3mm.
  3. Now go to property manager and select compress option to delete all unnecessary PID’s. PID’s changed now from 1586 to 117.
  4. Now again, Select Mesh from classic mesh deck and Select Elements and long press on wrap option. Select constant wrap.
  5. Give name as fullwrap and set target length as 3mm.
  6. And select all PID’s from contents of Octree scenario to Octree scenario and select run option.
  7. Now surface wrapped merged model is obtained.

LEARNING OUTCOME:

  1. Lifelong Learning
  2. Modern Tool Usage
  3. Communication

RESULT:

  • Deleted the unwanted surfaces from all individual models.
  • Merged all parts so that a watertight geometry is obtained.
  • Applied Surface wrap with target length of 3mm successfully

This link includes individual Cleanedup individual models and surface wrapped merged model.

CONCLUSION:

Best results were obtained when mesh sizes were smaller, but increase in mesh elements is not appreciable as this may leads to more computation times and distorted shapes especially for regions nearer to missed hole features.
