Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly
Aim: Performing surface wrapping over an automotive assembly in ANSA platform.
Objective:
- To perform geometrical clean up only at the external surface for the three separate parts of the given geometry of automotive assembly.
- To merge three parts and wrap the external surfaces of the assembly with wrap size as 5 mm.
Surface wrapping :
When we have a very detailed model in the sense that the model needs to be meshed with very detailed and small mesh, if the model has too many parts and if the mesh size is given smaller then it would resulted in a time-consuming process. In such cases surface wrapping is done to reduce the detailed model and delete the original model, compress it. surface wrapping is a procedure likewise putting a blanket over the surface of a model and deleting the original model compressing it and meshing the outside wrap and reducing the simulation time.
The procedure followed in this study of surface wrapping has been demonstrated below-

At the very outset each geometry has to be imported individually and geometry clean up needs to be done on the surface only. The initial and final geometrically cleaned-up figures of the engine, transmission and gearbox have been shown below. In case of engine part, lot of unnecessary parts are there which need to be deleted. For this, we can choose universal delete option by hiding necessary parts of the engine as shown in the figure below.

The final geometrically cleaned-up parts of the engine, transmission and gear box are shown below-

Procedure followed for Merging :
After geometric cleaning up of the three parts, now we have to merge them as a single volume. For merging locate the MERGE option under FILE tool bar, then select all the three parts one by one and Check on Merge Parts and click ok. The figure shown below is the merged automotive assembly.

After merging all the parts into one volume, surface wrapping is done by going to mesh element. The sequence for this procedure is as follows-
mesh-element-octree-wrap-constant length

During this process, compress tool is used to delete the unwanted or unallocated PIDs. 5 mm mesh size is used for the surface wrapping of the whole geometry in this case. The final assembly after surafce wrapping is demonstrated in the figure below.

Conclusion :
- Gemetrical clean up of the given three individual models were done for different types of surface errors using set of tools available in ANSA.
- The three models were merged using Merge to create a common volume.
- Surface wrap is done over the merged automotive assembly with wrap size of 5 mm.
