Week 5 Challenge
To calculate the design wind loads for the bridge in Mumbai, we need to follow the guidelines provided in the Indian Standard Code of Practice for Design Loads (IS 875 Part 3)-
-
Determine the basic wind speed: The basic wind speed for Mumbai can be obtained from the IS 875 Part 3 code. As per the code, the basic wind speed for Mumbai is 50 m/s (180 km/h). The value of basic wind speed for Mumbai, India, as per IS 875 Part 3, is given in Table 1 of the standard. The table is provided on page 7 of the document. The value for Mumbai can be found in the row corresponding to "Zone IV", which is the zone that covers the city. The value for the basic wind speed is given as 50 m/s for a return period of 50 years.
-
Determine the topography factor: The topography factor depends on the location and surroundings of the bridge. Since the bridge is located in open terrain with well-scattered obstructions of height less than 10m, the topography factor can be taken as 1.0.
-
Determine the terrain roughness factor: The terrain roughness factor depends on the surface roughness of the area around the bridge. Since the bridge is located in open terrain, the terrain roughness factor can be taken as 0.15.
-
Determine the importance factor: The importance factor depends on the importance of the structure. For a bridge, the importance factor can be taken as 1.0.
-
Determine the design wind speed: Using the above factors, the design wind speed can be calculated as follows: Design wind speed = Basic wind speed x Topography factor x Terrain roughness factor x Importance factor = 50 x 1.0 x 0.15 x 1.0 = 7.5 m/s
-
Determine the wind pressure on the bridge: The wind pressure on the bridge can be calculated using the following formula: q = 0.6 x Kz x Kzt x V^2 where q = wind pressure (kN/m^2) Kz = wind velocity exponent (taken as 0.25) Kzt = topography exponent (taken as 1.0) V = design wind speed (m/s)
Substituting the values, we get: q = 0.6 x 0.25 x 1.0 x 7.5^2 = 8.4375 kN/m^2
- Determine the wind load on the bridge: The wind load on the bridge can be calculated as follows: Wind load = q x Cg x A where Cg = gust factor (taken as 1.0) A = area exposed to wind (taken as the projected area of the pier)
Substituting the values, we get: Wind load = 8.4375 x 1.0 x (1.5 x 1.5) = 18.9843 kN
- Apply the wind load in Staad.pro: To apply the wind load in Staad.pro, we need to specify the load pattern, load case and load type. We can create a load pattern called "Wind" and add a load case called "Wind Load" under it. The load type can be taken as "Pressure" and the wind load value can be specified as 18.9843 kN for the pier element.
- We have prepared a Geometry Model accordingly and completed an analysis of the bridge using Stadd. pro and results obtained after analysis are attached herewith.
