Aim : To perform the simulation of iPhone bending.

Software: Ansys 2021 R1

Objective:

  • To simulate the model with the pushing fingers at initial position (case 1)
  • To simulate the model by moving the pushing fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm.
  • To find out the directional deformation for the model, Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL, Equivalent stress, Equivalent stress.
  • To compare the results and present with the conclusion for the two cases.

Introduction:

This bending test on iPhone is about holding it with the two hands , by pushing it with the help of the two thumbs in order to bend it at the middle.

Procedure for setup

Open ANSYS>>Drag and drop static structural model in the project schematic window.

Go to the engineering data to choose the materials (Aluminium Alloy 1199, Polyethylene.

Duplicate Polyethylene material and change its data into that of glass.

Go to the model tab

Rename the different as required

Go to connection >> contacts

Delete the contacts where there is interrogation point

Make with them frictionless contacts except "bonded-Display To Frame" which is bonded contact type

Create the joints as follows:

Create the joints for the pushing fingers as follows:

Go to tab for the meshing:

Element size= 4mm as follows

The following analysis settings are defined for the simulation.

Go to solution tab and insert directional deformation Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL, Equivalent stress, Equivalent stress.

Conclusion

Through this bending test on iPhone, we noticed that by moving the pushing fingers to the middle of the iPhone (second case), the characteristics such as Safety factor, directional deformation, equivalent stress, equivalent elastic strain are decreasing. Further this test is showing us how strong iPhone is.
