Week 5 Bending of iPhone

OBJECTIVE:-

To simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below

Case 1: Simulate the model as it is given in the video

Case 2: Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also, define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Stress, MPa Number of Cycles, N
225 10000
175 100000
143 1000000
110 10000000
80 100000000

CASE SETUP AND EXECUTION:-

1. First open the Ansys workbench.

2. Next go to the tool box select analysis systems double click on the static structural pop up on the graphical area as shown below.

3. Next right click on the engineering data click on the edit select the required materials as shown below.

ALUMINUM ALLOY NL

GLASS

POLYETHYLENE

4. Next right click on the geometry select the import geometry to select the geometry.

5. Right-click on the geometry select edit geometry in space claim it opens new tab as shown below.

6. Next right click on the model select edit it opens a new tab as shown below.

GEOMETRY SETUP

I phone

Here assign the materials for display, frame and inside

Display material is glass assign

Frame material is aluminium alloy NL

Inside material is polythene

Pushing fingers

Here one pushing finger is flexible and another one is rigid.

Fixed fingers

Here all fixed fingers are rigid.

CONNECTIONS:-

First, select all connections right click on the selections click on the rename based on the definitions as shown below.

For pushing finger 2

7. Next right click on the solution select the solve the analysis is starting.

RESULTS OF CASE 1:-

 Directional deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent elastic strain

RESULTS OF CASE 2:-

1. First create the S-N curve for the aluminium curve talking the given values as shown below.

Stress, MPa Number of Cycles, N
225 10000
175 100000
143 1000000
110 10000000
80 100000000

2. Update the model and solve the solution.

Directional deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent elastic strain

Life

Safety factor

COMPARISON:-

CASE

EQUIVALENT STRESS

              (MPA)

EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN

                (MPA)

DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION
CASE 1 836.69 0.23439 8
CASE 2 919.85 0.1074 4.4273

CONCLUSION:-

By observing the above results case 2 gives the best result in directional deformation and equivalent elastic strain.
