3-D Meshing the Rear View Mirror of a Car according to the given Quality Criteria using ANSA

Objective:

  • To check for the geometrical errors.
  • To mesh with the given element Quality criteria.
  • To use tetra elements to model the component.
  • To make sure that there are no kinks and dips on the surface of the component.

Procedure:

1. Open the model in ANSA.

2. The imported model will look like this:

3. Perform a topo on the whole component.

4. The component will now look like this:

5. Perform a geometry check on the component and fix any errors that show up.

6. On careful observation of the model, it can be seen that it comprises of 4 parts, i.e four different solids.

7. Hence, we isolate them and mesh them individually.

8. A cleanup is done on the geometry such that there are no regions where elements will fail for minimum criteria.

Shell- Meshing

9. Meshing is done using trias on the surfaces.

10. Orthogonal trias are used for curved surfaces and fillets.

11. Normal trias are used for flat surfaces.

12. The quality criteria is set as below:

13. After meshing we need to convert the shell mesh into a volume mesh.

14. Go to the Volume tab -> Define -> Manual

15. Select the meshed component and create a new PSOLID property.

16. The next step is to go to Tetra FEM in the Volume tab.

17. Select the meshed components one by one and hit the middle mouse button.

18. The 2D mesh will be converted into a 3D mesh.

19. Check for Tet- Collapse on the 3D elements and use the move command to fix them.

Result:

Learning Outcomes:

  • Converting 2D shell mesh to 3D tetra mesh using Tetra FEM.
  • Using Orthogonal and normal trias to mesh surfaces effectively.
  • Learning about Tet-Collapse and methods to fix it.

The Final meshed model will look as shown below:

Thus, the given model was 3D- meshed according to the given quality criteria given with smooth surfaces without any kinks or dents.
