Challenge

Week 5

AIM

To check for the geometrical errors and mesh with the given element Quality criteria for the given rear view mirror component. And to use tetra elements to model the component and there should not and kinks and dips on the surface of the component.

PROCEDURE

  • For this given component TETRA MESH is done. And Tetra mesh is of two kinds. One is ORTHOTRIA is used for fillet region and another is normal TRIA which is used for plane surfaces.
  • For Tertra mesh no midsurface extraction is needed.
  • First step is check geometry is done and some errors are fixed untill it execute successful.
  • Then length is assigned in MESH MODE. For both Perimeter and macro the length is assigned as 1 which is the average length in quality criteria.
  • Then the thickness are measured for the whole component. and especially for fillets, the thickness should be more than the minimum length given.
  • Next the quality criteria is assigned as per given in the challenge. AVERAGE LENGTH is 1, MINIMUM LENGTH is 0.5, MAXIMUM LENGTH is 2, and for volume mesh TET COLLAPSE is assigned as 0.2.
  • Then MESH PARAMETERS are assigned and type is given as ORTHOTRIA.
  • Then started with the meshing. Here the meshing is done with SPOT MESH. and ORTHOTRIA is applied on the fillet regions and TRIA is assigned as plane surfaces.
  • And after meshing, went to HIDDEN MODE to check the quality failures. some quality failures are rectified with reconstructing the mesh and KINKS and EDGES are also checked on the surface. Here on the surface there should no kinks and raised edges To move it MV FREE command is used to move the edges on X, Y, Z axis as per our needs.
  • By achieving zero quality failures with the SHELL MESH, proceeded with the volume mesh.
  • In TRIA MAPPING there wont be any flow, the flow will be random in manner.
  • Here started with the VOLUME MESH, We can use either TETRA RAPID or TETRA FEM. Here I have used TETRA FEM for Volume mesh.
  • Before starting with the meshing, the compponent must be defined as a closed volume.
  • For defining volume, VOLUME MESH mode is selected. There Under DEFINE, MANUAL is selected and under manual, AUTO is selected and the whole component is selcted using box selection.
  • By defining, A new property will be created for the part. PSOLID will be created.
  • And after defining, under LIST, there will the list of PSOLID properties assigned and all the peoperty status will be unmeshed so by right clicking each and every property click on REMEShH and select TETRA FEM and the property will be meshed with TETRA FEM.
  • By this way all the part were Volume meshed.
  • Switch off FE and CAD can see the volume mesh and there also kinks and raised edges are checked and corrected using MV FREE.
  • And in hidden mode Quality criteria is checked, and the COllapse is given more important than the max. and min. length criteria. soo some Length criteria is negligible.
  • And finally The volume is released form the FE and CAD.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learned to work on volume mesh. And ORTHOTRIA, TRIA, VOLUME MESH, TETRA FEM, TETRA RAPID, TET COllAPSE in Quality criteria were the new terms learnd form this Challenge.

CONCLUSION

Hereby I conclude that for the given component, the geometrical errors are checked and meshed with the given element Quality criteria. And tetra elements were used to model the component and there were and kinks and dips on the surface of the component.
