Week 4:- Pin Unit Design Challenge

Pin Unit Design:-

OBJECTIVE -1. Design 2 Different types of Fixed Pin Unit with Different Pins, Riser, Blade, and Block.

2. Design 2 Different types of Retractable Pin Unit with Different Pins, Riser, Blade, Cylinder, and Block.

Theory:- To make a Biw fixture the concept of 2 pin is used, first pin controls the 4 way axis translation restrict and other one is used to control the 2 way rotational motion.

Fundamentals ➖

  1. Pin height must be 3-5mm from the car panel surface.

  2. Simming must be used for the X and Y direction adjustment control.

  3. If the hole is round, then a round pin should be used for arresting 4 way directions.

  4. If the hole is slot type, then a round pin should be used for arresting 2 way directions.

  5. If the hole is round, then a diamond pin should be used for arresting 4 way directions.

There are 2 type of pin:

1. Fixed pin unit:- A unit which is using only a fixed pin for supporting the car panel.

2. Retractable pin unit:- A unit which used a retractable cylinder. These cylinders help the unit to move up and down

Parts of the Fixed pin unit:-

  1. Round Pin:- A round pin is used for the round pin hole.

  2. Retainer:- Retainer holds the pin.

  3. Sim:- Sims are used for minor adjustment in two directions which are perpendicular to each other.

  4. L-block:- L-block connects the retainer and the stand/ riser.

Parts of the retractable pin unit:-

Retractable pin unit has all the parts as Fixed pin unit and one additional part name as Hydraulic cylinder.

Design Methodology:-

  1. Pin collar has a flat portion to prevent the rotation of the pin.

  2. The size of the pin is as per hole of the part given to us to design the fixture.

  3. Sequence of the fixture design is pin with collar > retainer > sim for one direction > L-block > sim perpendicular to previous direction > stand / riser.

  4. Snap is used for the part adjustment for setting.

  5. All parts have holes for the bolt setting.
