Week 3 Challenge : CFD meshing on Turbocharger
CFD Meshing on Turbocharger
Aim:
For the given model, check for the geometrical errors to make appropriate volumes. Create and assign PIDs as shown in the video. Perform surface mesh with the given target lengths as per PIDs.
Objectives:
- Blade stage-1 = 1 mm
- Blade stage-2 = 1 mm
- Impeller = 2 mm
- Shaft rotor = 1 mm
- Turbo casing = 5 mm
- Compressor casing = 5 mm
- Inlet casing cover = 5 mm
Procedure:
Topo and geometry clean up:
- Start with the topo clean by doing geometry check to find single and triple cons in the geometry. Select topo under faces and box select the entire model so that any missing cons can be detected and the geometry cleanup be done more accurately.
- Delete unnecessary overlapping surface by using the delete option.
- Start with fill the surface and cleaning the single cons and triple cons.
- Created certain areas by using the new option under faces, we does not satisfy the surfaces we require, therefore, certain hot points are projected so that we are crated small surfaces can be created then join together all small surfaces to required geometry profile.

- Use intersect option to delete the surface which has no separate entity, therefore a separate entity is formed when using intersect then we can deleted easily.
- Now we are solving for triple cons which are present at the shaft volume region, since we need to have a single volume which makes it easier to mesh in the later stage. Deleted the overlapping surfaces to reduce them to double cons.

- After that we removed to unnecessary triple cons, then to give name each part to assigning them an individual PID.
Surface meshing:
- We need to mesh each component as per the given criteria in the question, therefore we need to mesh the component individually.
- Enter the quality and mesh parameter and length of the mesh accordingly for each component.

- While entering the mesh length, be aware of the change in mesh length between components with different mesh length, when they come in contact they tend to erase the other mesh, therefore while entering the perimeter and macros we need to give a range from the bigger to small mesh length to avoid the mesh to get erased.

- After the mesh is generated, we can created a boundary of the varying mesh length and maintain a constant mesh length on the other side of the boundary.
Volume meshing:
- Choose define and select whole db in the pop up window.
- ANSA identifies various volume present in the geometry, we can delete the unwanted ones and keep the necessary volumes where the fluids can possibly flow in geometry.

- After deleting the outer thickness volume and only keeping the fluid volume region, we can re-mesh each volume using the tetra CFD option under re-mesh.
- After each volume is re-meshed, the volume mesh can be viewed each component.

Conclusion:
The given model of turbo charger is made error free and a proper volumetric meshing is created while a total of 9891105volumes are created.
Learning outcome:
From this project i have learn how to perform the surface meshing and volumetric meshing and gets exposed different tools in ANSA.
