Week 3 Challenge : CFD meshing on Turbocharger

Aim:To perform the surface mesh and volumetric mesh to the given turbochrger model by using ANSA software.

Hardware Required:Desktop,Mouse,Keyboard,CPU.

Software Required:ANSA v23.0.1x64bit software.

Theory/Description:

  • ANSA is an advanced multidisciplinary CAE pre-processing tool that provides all the necessary functionality for full-model build up, from CAD data to ready-to-run solver input file, in a single integrated environment.
  • ANSA is the users preference due to its wide range of features and tools that meet their needs. The list of productive and versatile features is long and the alternative tasks and processes to be completed using them are countless.
  • In case of Meshing, ANSA has integrated Batch Meshing tool, which leads to controllable and effortless optimal results, for both shell and volume meshing. Following the versatile mesh area idealization, geometry can be meshed according to modeling requirements by cutting edge surface and volume meshing and wrapping algorithms.
A unique mesh generation environment is composed by:
      - proprietary shell meshing algorithms
      - high performance and quality volume meshing algorithms
      - state-of-the-art boundary layers elements deployment
      - Hexahedral dominant meshing
      - Acoustic Cavity mesher and the straight forward Wrapping tool
      - one-step mesh generation on automatically extracted middle surface
      - numerous mesh handling functions.

Procedure:

1.Open the ANSA software and import the given turbocharger model from the files.

2.Check the given model for topo clean up and also whether present any other geometrical errors like single cons and triple cons.

3.If you found any glitchings, then start topo clean up and delete unwanted PID's from the model.

4.After that fix all the single and triple cons if present any in the model.

5.After completion topo clean-up and fixing all errors, close the open portions in the complete model for the sake of volumetric meshing.

6.Then after that, assign the differet PID's to each and every part in the given model for the effictive work and figuring out the particular part when needed.

7.Then start surface meshing by setting the quality criteria's and the mesh parameters as per required with respect to every part.

8.Set the macros and parameter length with respect to every part in the complete model as shown below

  • Blade stage-1 = 1 mm
  • Blade stage-2 = 1 mm
  • Impeller = 2 mm
  • Shaft rotor = 1 mm
  • Turbo casing = 5 mm
  • Compressor casing = 5 mm
  • Inlet casing cover = 5 mm

9.After completion of surface meshing, start volumetric meshing in the volumetric mesh deck in the ANSA software.

10.After opening the Volumetric mesh deck in the ANSA, first check for the volumes present in your given model.

11.Then delete the unwanted volumes and remesh the volumes by setting Tetra CFD.

12.After done with the volumetric mesh, save the file.

Precautions:

1.Make sure that there should not be any single or triple cons before going to surface meshing.

2.Make sure there should not be any overleft surfaces present in the model, before going to volumetric meshing.

3.Check wisely each and every portion after every task listed below

  • Topo clean-up
  • Surface meshing

4.Make sure there should not be unmeshed surfaces and volumes before saving the file.

Result:Surface meshing and Volumetric meshing was done with the given dimensions for a given turbocharger model by using ANSA software.

NOTE:Due to the large size of the ansa file, only link was provided in the below given document, like skill lynk community suggested.

Conclusion:For every given model, before perform meshing either surface or volumetric we need to do the topo clean-up and also removing the single and triple cons which are present in the given model is much important for the successful and accurate meshing. Quality criteria and Mesh parameters plays a key role in meshing process.
