Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Aim: To simulate vehicle performance using the Advisor tool.
Simulation1: For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle?
The EV_defaults in file is a battery electric vehicle(BEV). BEV's use only battery as energy source. For the vehicle to travel for 45 km, the battery capacity should be greater than the energy required to travel 45 km with FTP drive cycle.
Fig.1- Vehicle parameters in Advisor tool

Fig.2-Simulation parameters in Advisor tool
The total distance covered in one FTP drive cycle is 17.7 km, so the vehicle needs to cover 2.55 drive cycles to travel 45 km.
Fig.3-Results setup in Advisor tool
The results for 2.55 times of the FTP drive cycle is given below:

The vehicle is able to travel only for 41.36 km before its state of charge equals zero. Hence the vehicle needs a higher battery capacity to travel 45 km without recharge.
Simulation2: In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
The number of battery modules is increased to 35 to increase the battery capacity.

The vehicle can travel for 47.2 km with a battery of 35 modules.
Simulation 3: Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Results setup

The grade force is not a function of vehicle speed but the air drag exponentially increases with vehicle speed. Hence the tractive force required increases with an increase in vehicle speed. The gradeability decreases with an increase in vehicle speed as shown in the above table.
