Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Q1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Ans - The Ev_defaults_in file vehicle is a purely electric vehicle. It is powered only by a motor of 75kw which delivers an efficiency of 92%.

- The cargo mass was changed to 500 kg resulting in an overall calculated mass of 1508 kg.

- Initial No. of cycles kept were one and the file was made to run.

Result :

- It is seen that the vehicle can travel a distance of only 11 miles.

- So in one cycle it can cover a distance of 17.76 km, which means if we increase the cycle by 2.53 times it should be able to cover a distance of 45km.

- The next step would be to increase the no. of cycles by 2.53 times

Result :-

- The distance travelled comes out to be only 25.7 miles i.e. 41.35 kms.

- A warning message also appears saying required distance exceeds the EV range.

CONCLUSION : Our vehicle cannot travel a distance of 45 km as this range exceeds the battery capacity.

SOLUTION : To increase the battery capacity.

Q.2 - In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Ans - The battery capacity was changed form 25 modules to 40 modules

- The program was run and the the following were the results.

- It covered a distance of 29 miles i.e. 46 kms.

- Increasing the battery module resulted in the increase in EV range.

CNCLUSION :- Simulation was repeated with change in battery module and the desired distance was achieved.

Q.3 - Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

ANS -

Prius is a hybrid electric vehicle which runs on both engine as well as on an electric motor.

Gradeability test has been peroformed for this vehicle as per below data.

SR.NO SPEED (MILES) SPEED(KM) DURATION(SEC) GRADEABILITY(%)
1 55 88 30 1.7
2 60 96 30 1.5
3 65 104 30 6.5
4 70 112 30 1
5 75 120 30 0.7
6 80 128 30 0.3

- Speed was increased at a rate of 5mph for a duration of 30 seconds

- Results are as follows.

1-

2-

3-

4-

5-

6-

CONCLUSION - In conclusion we can agree that as the vehicle speed increases the gradeability decreases respectively.
