Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

ADVISOR tool (ADvanced Vehicle SimularOR), is developed in 1994 by the national Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) allow users to stimulate and analyze conventional, advance, light and heavy vehicle. This tool allow user to change the effect in vehicle component like motors, batteries, climate control system etc.

Benefit of ADVISOR tool.

  • Estimate the fuel economy of vehicle that have not yet been built.
  • Learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicle use.
  • Evaluate energy management in hybrid vehicle.
  • Optimize the gear ratio in your transmission to minimize fuel use..

ANS 1).

First we have to load EV_defaults_in from the drop down menu and changing Parallel_default_in to EV_defaults_in from vehicle input window.

Then we have to change cargo mass to 500kg, and we get total mass of vehicle that is 1508, (below cargo mass box )

See the change of vehicle input window and mass in below picture

Then we have to click on continue button after that a new window will pop up.

In the simulation parameter window change drive cycle to CYC_FTP by selecting the drop menu.

and then in below we will see # of cycles from here we have to set our drive cycle seen in picture below:-

after that we have to click on RUN button, then simulation will start and result will show in new window.

In the Result the distance travelled by the vehicle in 1 drive cycle is 17.8km .

Then we have to change the drive cycles

so

Increase no of drive cycle to 2. show in picture below

The Result of drive cycle 2 will be show below.

The distance tarvelled by the vehicle in drive cycle 2 is 35.5km. use almost 81% SOC.

Then change drive cycle to 3.

Show the result of drive cycle 3 ..

The distance travelled by the vehicle in 3 drive cycle is 41.4KM. and use amlost 100% soc.

NO OF DRIVE CYCLE DISTANCE COVERED IN KMS
1 17.8
2 35.5
3 41.4

So, The minimum distance travelled by car is 17.8km with the drive cycle CYC_FTP-1 whereas the maximum distance travelled by car is 41.4km which consumes 100% battery in 3 drive cycle.

Therefore EV_default cannot travel distance of 45km due to insufficent SOC.

ANS 2).

First we have to open the window of ADVISOR, we will change the capacity of battery from energy storage.

"#of mod V nom" describe the battery capacity, so we will change the module number of battery from the first box and we will see you change in voltage and weight of battery.

when the window will open we will change the drive cycle to 2 or 3 and at that time run the simulation,

and after complete the simulation, we will see the result and obsereve the change in distance travel by vehicle, and repeat this simulation by changing the battery module and the drive cycle

RESULTS FOR DRIVE CYCLE 2

Battery Mod Voltage km Battery weight
26 321 35.5 286
27 333 35.5 297
28 345 35.5 308

RESULT FOR DRIVE CYCLE 3

Battery Mod Voltage km Battery weight
26 321 42.7 286
27 333 44.8 297
28 345 46.3 308

Battery modules 28 and with 3 drive cycle, thr distance traveled is 46.3km

  • While changing the battery modules in drive cycle 2 we get constant distance travel.
  • Changing thr battery module in drive cycle 3 we get change in distance travel by vehicle.
  • To cover 45km distance a 28 modules 345-volt battery is required.

ANS 3).

  • In ADVISOR tool vehicle input window select PRIUS_Jpn_default model.
  • Continue to the next window.
  • Simulation parameters window will open.
  • select the gradeability test and click on the grade option box, a new dialogue box will open.

  • In the gradeability box we can change speed or duration with respect to our simulation.
  • So, for this simulation, we can change speed one time and duration another time.
  • click ok and run the simulation and a result window will open showing different result depend upon input data.

RESULT FOR THE DURATION 10 SEC:-

1). Speed -20 miles/h or 32.2kmph

Gradeability=19.8%

2). Speed -25 miles/h or 40.2kmph

Gradeability=16.5%

3). Speed -30 miles/h or 48.3kmph

Gradeability=14.7%

4). Speed -35 miles/h or 56.3kmph

Gradeability=13%

Table For Duration-10sec

S.NO VEHICLE SPEED MPH VEHICLE SPEDD KMPH GRADEABILITY %
1 20 32.2 19.8
2 25 40.2 16.5
3 30 48.3 14.7
4 35 56.3 13.0

RESULT FOR THE DURATION-20 SEC:-

1). Speed -20miles/h or 32.2kmph.

Gradeability=22.9%

2). Speed -25miles/h or 40.2kmph.

Gradeability=19.7%

3). Speed -30miles/h or 48.3kmph.

Gradeability=17.7%

4). Speed -35miles/h or 56.3kmph.

Gradeability=16%

Table For Duration 20 sec

S.NO VEHICLE SPEED MPH VEHICLE SPEED KMPH GRADEABILITY%
1 20 32.2 22.9
2 25 40.2 19.7
3 30 48.3 17.7
4 35 56.3 16.0

Hence in the final result

From the above both table for 10 and 20 sec, when the vehicle speed increase there is decrease in gradeability for both 10 and 20 sec duration.
