Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
AIM:
-
For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.
-
In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
-
Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.Compare your results in table and conclude.
ADVISOR TOOL:
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
You may benefit from using ADVISOR if you want to:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid, or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
1. TO USE EV_DEFAULTS_IN FILE, BY TAKING CARGO MASS OF 500KG WITH ALL THE DEFAULT CONDITIONS, CAN THE VEHICLE TRAVEL FOR 45 KM WITH FTP DRIVE CYCLE.
- by keeping the cargo weight for 500 kg in the advisor tool.

- by keeping the drive cycle as FTP drive cycle and changing the no. of cycles till the battery is fully discharged.
- the model consists of a motor battery arrangement, tipically a battery vehicle.
CASE 1: by keeping the no of cycle as '1'
- the no of cycles for the FTP drive cycle as 1.

- with no of cycles as 1, the vehicle will move a distance of 17.8 kms, and still having an SOC of 0.6%.
- to completely discharge the battery, we need to increase the no of drive cycles.
CASE 2: BY KEEPING THE NO OF DRIVE CYCLES AS 2
- know we are changing the no of drive cycles to 2.

- by changing the no of cycle to 2, the distance travelled by the vehicl is 35.8 km with an SOC of 0.4%.
CASE 3: BY KEEPING THE NO OF DRIVE CYCLES AS 3.
- know the no of drive cycles is kept as 3 and simuated.

- with complete discharge of the battery, the vehicle has moved a distance of 41.4 km
CONCLUSION:
- the FTP drive cycle is not suitable to drive the vehicle for 45 kms with the default battery capacity.
- to use FTP drive cycle and made to run for 45 kms. we need to increase the battery capacity i.e.., by increasing the no of modes.
2. BY KEEPING THE SAME FTP DRIVE CYCLE AND CHANGING THE BATTERY CAPACITY. EXPLAIN THE RESULTS.
CASE 1: BY CHANGING THE BATTERY MODES FROM 10, 20, 30, 40.
- in this case we are trying to change the no of modes for the battery and seeing the distance travelled by the vehicle.
- for increase in the battery modes from 10 to 40 there is an increase in the vehicle distance covered as well.

- the distance travelled by the vehicle are 13.8 km, 33.5 km, 49.1 km and 64.5 km for no of battery modes of 10, 20, 30, 40.
CASE 2:
- When we tried with no of battery modes as 50 and 60 there is a constant distance covered by the vehicle.

- by changing no of battery modes the vehicle is showing the same value of distance covered.
3. TO PERFORM GRADEABILITY TEST WITH PRIUS_JPN_DEFAULTS_IN FILE. COMPARE THE RESULTS.
- The model is selected to be as PRIUS_JPN_DEFAULTS_IN as given.
- by using this model, we are going to perform the gradability test for different speeds by keeping the time as constant i.e.., 30 seconds.
- in this gradability test, we have changed the speeds from 25 mph to 75 mph.
- by peerforming the test we have got the gradability percentage for the speeds from 25 mph to 75 mph.

- in the above image the gradability percentage in displayed.
- by simulating for different speeds we will getr different gradability percentage are listed in the tabler below:
| sl no | speed in mph | gradability percentage(%) |
| 1 | 35 | 2.5 |
| 2 | 45 | 2.2 |
| 3 | 55 | 1.7 |
| 4 | 65 | 6.5 |
| 5 | 75 | 0.7 |
CONCLUSION:
- by increase in the speed the gradability percentage is decrased by keeping all the default same unless by changing the time to 30 sec.
