Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Aim- 1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in a table and conclude.

Introduction-

ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user-defined drivetrain components, a starting point of varied vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modelling exibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
Advantages of ADVISOR tool:
Estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
The models in ADVISOR are:
mostly empirical, relying on drivetrain component input/output relationships measured in the laboratory, and quasi-static, using data collected in steady-state (for example, constant torque and speed) test and correcting them for transient effects such as the rotational the inertia of drivetrain components.

ADVISOR was preliminarily written and used in November 1994. Since then, it has been modified as necessary to help manage the US DOE Hybrid Vehicle
Propulsion System subcontracts. Only in January 1998 was a concerted development effort was undertaken to clean up and document ADVISOR.
Since then, over 4500 individuals have downloaded one or more versions of ADVISOR, including all of the OEMs and major suppliers. About 2/3 of the users are
from industry and 1/3 from universities.

The advisor Tool is mainly divided into 3 parts:

1. Vehicle and parameters Input window

2. Simulation Parameters window

3. Results Window

Solution-

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Launching the advisor tool in Matlab open on advisor.m file after opening the MatLab window, go to the command box and type advisor and press enter

Then the GUI of advisor opens up select the units and then click on start.

the above window opens default condition then go to load file and change it to EV_defaults_in

the above window opens up then change the cargo mass to 500kg then click continue.

In the drive cycle options select FTP and click run.

from the above image, we can see that the vehicle has travelled 17.8 km.

Now in the simulation window change the number of cycles to 2.

After that click on Run.

We can see that the distance moved is 35.5km and SOC at 20% nearly. now change the no. of cycles to 3.

Now at 41.4 km, the battery is left with no power.

SL no. no. of cycle distance travelled
1 1 17.8 km
2 2 35.5 km
3 3 41.4 km

The minimum distance travel by car is 17.8 km with drive cycle CYC_FTP – 1 whereas the maximum distance travel by car is 41.4 which consumes 100% of the battery in 3 Drive cycles.

Conclusions- EV default car cannot go for 45km with a load of 500kg as at41.4km battery is left with no power.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

In-Vehicle Input window we will change the capacity of the battery from the energy storage row which will be open in 1 “#of mod V nom” tells about the battery capacity, so we will change the module number which in turn results in a change of battery voltage and mass of the batteries.

change the battery modules to 26 and drive cycle to 3.

the car goes to a max. of 49.7 km with 26 battery module in 3 drive cycle.

Now we change the battery modules to 28.

So with 28 battery modules, the car can go to a distance of 53.4km.

Conclusion - So as we increase the number of battery modules the ability of a vehicle to cover more distance is also increased.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in a table and conclude.

First, open advisor and then change the model to PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in the above window shows the model of Prius.

then click on continue to simulation parameters window.

select gradeabilty test and grade options give the time and speed. The speed corresponds to the highest gradeability will be considered as the best speed to climb a slope.

we run the test for the same time that is 10 sec and vary the speeds.

at 45kmph

at 50kmph

at 55 kmph

at 60kmph

at 70kmph

so by carrying out the tests on varoius speeds we can find the gradeabilty of the Prius.
