Challenge

Week 3

AIM:

To extract the mid surface of the given model and to perform mesh flow using FINITE ELEMENT method.

REQUIREMENTS:

ANSA software

Given model

PROCEDURE:

* At first download the model form the given link

* Check for the geometry for errors and if any error occurs, give FIX option to fix it.

* Go to MESH option and LENGTH>> PERIMETERS>> select all>> GIVE value as 1. Do it as same in MACROS option also.

* Check again the GEOMETRY clean up and FIX the errors as much as can.

* Go to the PROPERTIES option and define the THICKNESS by choosing MEASURE Option and select the nodes.

* After defining the thickness, select OFFSET option and give the half of the thickness value to take the mid surface from the given properties.

* A single con do appear which means the mid surface is between the two double cons.

* To extract only the mid surface, select (!-) option below and select PROPERTY REGION option, and click middle mouse button.

* The mid surface alone is generated. repeat the same process in each 5 elemental properties and extract the mid surfaces of each 5 elements.

* give SET PID to each and every elements and save in PROPERTY mode.

* After extracting the mid surface, CHECK the geometry and perform TOPOLOGY clean up.

* Hence, mid surface is all generated and checked for all the properties.

* Give STORE LOCK and lock every properties' mid surfaces.

MESHING PROCEDURE:

* At first, go to MANAGE LOCKS and keep the view as you want. and go to LENGTH option in MESH mode, and select all of the elements in the view and give the values as 5, both in PERIMETERS and MACROS. So, the distance between the nodes will be 5.

* In order to mesh the elements, select QUALITY CRITERIA, and enter the values as given in the question. Enable the percentage ranges. Then, go to MESH PARAMETERS and ive the values of MAX. LENGTH, MIN.LENGTH and AVERAGE LENGTH and OK.

* Select the any element and bring it to the view. Then, select the faces of the elements and give MESH GENERATION>> BEST/GRADUAL/BATCH mesh to get the mesh flow.

* The mesh flow is generated. If the error with respect to quality criteria occurs by means of colours, go to SHELL MESH>>RECONSTRUCT/RESHAPE/SMOOTH. So, the proper mesh flow will be obtained in smoother areas. If the mesh error occurs in cuts and features, give JOIN/CUT options and select the region we need. And give SMOOTH option for getting proper mesh flow without errors.

* Unnecessary cuts can be removed by giving CUT/JOIN option.

* Repeat this process in every midsurfaces in which we extracted by changing its lock view, so that every properties can be meshed properly.

* For larger surfaces like mid and top extracts, delete the half of the surfaces and do the proper mesh in half surface. Then, go to TRANSFORM >> COPY>> SELECT ALL ENTITIES>> MIRROR SYMMETRY>> select the three points like top end, middle, and bottom end>> APPLY. The mirror entity is formed opposite to existing surface. It will be easier and less time consuming.

* Make sure that the mesh flow is to be natural in all the surfaces and the features and projection construction lines should not be cut so far. For smaller faces, no SELECT ALL ENTITIES>>MESH. If any error occurs, RECONSTRUCT/RESHAPE/SMOOTH wherever it it necessary and needed for.

* Keep an eye on the mesh parameters and percentage parameters and try as much as can for reducing the trias elements. Keep meshing until the mesh flow is to be regular.

* Make sure to save the model for each and every process when it is over for every 5 minutes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

From this challenge, I learnt that every surface has to be properly analysed and every meshes are very important. And also, if the mesh flow is proper and correct, the material can withstand all the stresses and some other external forces. I learnt that before the material is to be manufactured, the geometric and topologic cleanup should be properly achieved. And moreover, the properties will be segregated into certain elements and each and every parts are to be extracted and meshed. Every properties have certain forces to withstand. So, each and every parts are to be properly analysed. These are the things which I learnt from this challenge.

CONCLUSION:

Hence, the process of extracting and taking the meshes of mid surfaces of each and every properties are done in FINITE ELEMENT METHOD.
