Week 2 Railwheel and Track

AIM:

  • To perform structural analysis on Railwheel track and to find the equivalent stress, Total deformation, and life under give load cases and to find the deformation using an expression.

Procedure:

  • Open ansys workbench and drag and drop a static structural standalone system using the mouse.

  • Double click on engineering data and add the materials required for the analysis.
  • Now import the geometry of the rail wheel track.

  • Now create contacts and joints required in the analysis.
  • Between the wheel and the track create the frictional type of contact with a frictional coefficient value of 0.3.

  • Between the wheel and the shaft create a frictionless type of contact.

  • Now create joints to produce the required motion and mechanism.
  • Create a translation joint for the shaft.

  • Create a fixed joint for the track.

  • Create a planar joint for the wheel face to make sure that the face remains in the respective plane throughout the simulation.

  • Now go to mesh menu and inset face sizing with element size as 35mm.

  • Now mesh the entire assembly with an element size of 35mm.

  • After creating proper joints and contacts now change analysis settings change number load steps to 5 and for load step 1 keep time-stepping as program-controlled.

  • For load steps 2 to 5 change the analysis settings as below.

  • No apply bearing load and joint displacement for the translation joint in tabular format.

  • Now insert the required results under solution.

  • Now Simulate the model to obtain the results.

RESULTS:

  • TOTAL DEFORMATION.FOR BEARING LOAD OF 100000N.

  • EQUIVALENT STRESS FOR BEARING LOAD OF 100000N.

  • EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN FOR BEARING LOAD OF 100000N.

  • FATIGUE LIFE FOR BEARING LOAD OF 100000N.

  • Now we have to perform the simulation for a bearing load of 5times the given bearing load that is for 50000N.
  • As the geometry, model, setup and analysis setting are the same for the simulation of the model under a bearing load of 500000N so we can perform a parametric study.
  • Now create a parameter set for bearing load for all the results required.

  • Close ansys mechanical and we can able to see the parameter set created for the simulation.

  • Now open the parameter set by double-clicking on the parameter set and inset the load value which is 5times the bearing load i.e., 500000N.

  • After inserting a load value of 500000N update the selected design point to obtain results.

CASE:1 COMPARISON OF RESULTS FOR BEARING LOADS OF 100000N AND 500000N

SL.NO BEARING LOAD(N) LIFE TOTAL DEFORMATION EQUIVALENT STRESS(MPa) ELASTIC STRAIN
1 100000N 1.0E+006 999.37 118.1 0.00067054
2 500000N 1867.7 999.43 452.76 0.0025823
  • From the above results for which the bearing load is 100000N and 500000N, we can say that the model which is subjected to a high amount of bearing load undergoes similar deformation, it has less fatigue life and produces more amount of stress and strains.

CASE:2 USER DEFINED DEFORMATION:

  • To find the user-defined result insert the user-defined result under the solution tab. To obtain any user-defined results we have to create an expression for the results.
  • For total deformation, the expression for the user-defined result is the square root of (Ux^2+Uy^2+Uz^2).

COMPARISION OF USER-DEFINED RESULT AND RESULT OBTAINED FROM SIMULATION:

  • The total deformation obtained from the simulation results and from the user-defined expression is the same i.e., 999.73mm.

CONCLUSIONS:

  • The simulation of RAIL-WHEEL-TRACK for the given cases have been performed successfully.
  • The results for all the cases are obtained and compared.
  • The user-defined results by using ansys worksheet are calculated successfully.
