Week 2 - Converging diverging nozzle
AIM:
- To simulate a flow through a converging-diverging nozzle using ANSYS Fluent.
OBJECTIVE:
- At Inlet, Pressure = 1atm and Temperature = 300K. The outlet pressure= 0.027 atm. In the operating conditions, consider the reference pressure to be zero.
- Plot: The pressure, velocity and temperature variations across the domain.
PROCEDURE:
Open space claim in Ansys Fluent.
Geometry:

MESH:
- Face meshing is enabled
- A mesh size of 2 mm is given and for edge sizing, it is 1 mm

- Named the boundaries as Inlet, Outlet, Axis and wall.

SETUP:
- Density based
- Axis symmetric
- Energy option is enabled
- Inviscid flow
- Material set to Ideal Gas air
- In operating conditions the pressure is set to 0 to remove round off errors which common in density based solvers
- A standard initialisation from inlet is done
- Run for 1000 iterations

RESULTS:
- Pressure contour

- Velocity contour

- Temperature contour

- Mach number

CONCLUSION:
- Run a steady state simulation on converging diverging nozzle.
- Extracted necessory contours and plotted the variation of flow charecteristics like pressure , temperature, velocity and mach number.
- If the flow is subsonic then (M < 1), increase in the area (dA > 0 ) produces decrease in the velocity (dV < 0).
- For a supersonic flow (M > 1) velocity change (dV/V) is negative i.e. (1 - M^2 < 0), increase in the area (dA > 0) produces an increase in the velocity (dV > 0).
