Challenge

Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Aim : To check the geometrical errors and perform Topological cleanup accordingly. Also, apply mesh on the surface of the model with different target lengths.

Procedure :

CASE 1 : MESH LENGTH - 5MM

  1. To fill the model with the help of the following options Faces - New - Surface types. Use appropriate surface types to fill the model so that we can clear the errors.
  2. Check whether the model is free of errors using Checks - Checks manager - Pre_Surface_Meshing_Checks - Execute.
  3. Clear the errors present in the pop up window. Also, clear the penetration intersections in the model using Faces - interface option.
  4. Now the model is a closed model so that we can perform meshing. In CFD, the model should be closed to perform the analysis.
  5. We should apply PID's to the parts present in the model so that it will be helpful to give different Mesh Length if it is required.
  6. In the properties, Right click New - PSHELL - NEW. Give name for the PIDs for the different parts in the model.
  7. Six different PID's are taken in our case.
  8. Topo cleanup is done now and its time for meshing.
  9. Shift to Mesh Module, apply the Mesh Length in the Perimeters - Length - Macros & Perimeters as 5mm by box selecting the model.
  10. Give the Mesh length, min & max length and element type - TRIA in the Mesh Parameters & quality criteria.
  11. Ensure the mesh length is given in 4 locations - Macros, Perimeters, Mesh Parameters & quality criteria.
  12. Apply Spot Mesh from Mesh Generation and check whether all PIDs have mesh on the surface.
  13. By giving Mesh Length as 5mm, we can see the mesh is not good in Spring since the spring dia is smaller than the mesh length.
  14. Spring has deterioration in shape due to the higher mesh length.

CASE 2 : MESH LENGTH - 3MM

  1. Follow Step 1 - 12 from the previous case.
  2. Give mesh length as 3mm and change the max & min length in the Mesh Parameters & Quality criteria.
  3. You can see the spring shape is good now and the meshing is better than the case 1.

CASE 3 : MESH LENGTH - 1MM

  1. Follow Step 1 - 12 from case 1.
  2. Give mesh length as 1mm and change the max & min length in the Mesh Parameters & Quality criteria.
  3. Now, the meshing is better than the previous two cases. It is much finer with mesh length as 1.

Check the below attached images to compare the Meshing on the surface of the model.

RESULT :

Lower the mesh length, better will be the meshing on the surface and the results will be accurate.

* Cannot able to add ML-1mm file since it is bigger than 20mb. Instead added photos of the meshing
