Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Week 2 - Meshing of a Pressure Valve

The CAD model imported to ANSA contains many geometry errors. Hence field services are patched to form regular surface. Here required existing surface, planar surface and fitted surfaces are created using selection of single entities or loops selections.

Geometry Clean-up

Now the geometry is clean and there are no topological errors. This geometry can be used for further processing.

Assign PIDs

Once that is done the extra edges which are nearer to each other are removed in order to make the mesh fit. After that all the components of the pressure valve are identified and are given the shell property IDs. Hence 1 component is categorized into number of different components.

Mesh

1. Case 1, Target Length = 5mm

For 5 millimeters target length, by giving suitable minimum and maximum length in perimeter, macros, mesh parameters and quality parameters it can be seen from the above pictures that the curvature of a few components is not captured.

2. Case 2, Target Length = 3mm

With 3mm target length the curvature of the body is captured but there is misalignment of the elements  and the triangle elements are not fitted properly. Hence the mesh has to be refined again.

3. Case 3, Target Length = 1mm

For this case the maximum length is kept 3mm and minimum 0.7mm. These are values are provided in mesh parameters, quality parameters and in macros.

Using these settings the spring and the valve head are meshed using the spot mesh.

The below picture shows matching of the column and it can be seen that the peripheries and the curvatures present are captured completely.

Now 1mm being suitable, other regions are meshed with CFD mesh.

Using 1mm as the refined mesh, the total triangular elements obtained are around 81,000.
