Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

AIM

To mesh the given model using triangluar mesh with a target length of 5mm, 3mm, and 1mm.

PROCEDURE

  • First, import the given model.
  • Now, we have to clean up the geometry.
  • A geometry check is run to see all single cons and any other errors.
  • These single cons need to be converted to double cons.
  • Under topo module, using new faces or fill hole command, start filling up all geometry in the model.
  • Using cut command, remover any features which are very small and will hinder is meshing by right clicking on the cons.
  • Once all the holes are filled and geometry clean up is finished, re run geometry check. We can see a triple cons formed in the geometry check which can be ignored as it is the hole at the base of the valve which must be closed.
  • In the property list, add new shell properties and name them as required. Then add the respective geometry to them.
  • Using undelete and topo, add all the deleted faces to the geometry and then delete the same in the properties list.
  • Now, we start meshing.
  • At this point, the file is saved as it will be used multiple times for different mesh lengths.
  • Now, under mesh parameters and quality, set mesh length to 5mm, min length to 3mm and max length to 7mm. In length tool, set the length to 5mm in perimeter and macros for the entire model.
  • Now, generate mesh using any preferred mesh tool. The meshed model has 8744 tria elements approx.
  • Now, we repeate the same for 3mm and 1mm mesh length. Minimum and maximum lengths for 3mm mesh is set as 2mm and 4 mm respectively and for 1mm mesh, is set as 0.5mm and 1.5mm respectively.
  • The meshed model for 3mm mesh length has 25494 tria elements approx., and 1mm mesh length has 216990 tria elements.

CONCLUSION

The required meshed models are produced. It can be observed that the meshed geometry’s refinement increases as the element size decreases
