Week 2 Bevel Gear Challenge

Aim:

The aim is to analyze the given bevel gear.

Objective:

1)Write a few words on what a grid dependency test is and its use.

2)Perform a grid dependency test for the Bevel gear simulation for mesh sizes of 6,5 and 4 mm

3) Solve for Von-Mises stress, Equivalent elastic strain, and Total Deformation using the previously mentioned mesh sizes.

Grid dependency test :

Grid dependence test is the term used to describe the improvement of results by using successively smaller cell sizes for the calculations. A calculation should approach the correct answer as the mesh becomes finer. Mesh convergence determines how many elements are required in a model to ensure that the results of an analysis are not affected by changing the size of the mesh. System response (stress, deformation) will converge to a repeatable solution with decreasing element size. In this case we have used three different mesh sizes coarse, medium and finer mesh. From this analysis we can determine the accurate solution for decreasing mesh size when it converges for each solution to solve in the given geometry which is bevel gear.

Procedure:

Initially open the ansys workbench

and set the material in engg data

then open the model in the geometry

and then open and edit the model it will open in mechanical ansys page

then select all the given requirements like geometry, connection, contacts, mesh, static structural and solutions,

and then solve and extract as archive.

The animation and the archive file has been attached to the assets.

Conclusion :

Grid dependency test was performed successfully using three mesh size by incrementing Imm for each iteration. We get accurate results using 4 mm mesh size whereas 5 mm and 6 mm dont give better expected results.
