Week 14 challenge
AIM
The aim of this project is to design and assemble a butterfly valve and appl GD&T to it.
INTRODUCTION
Butterfly valves are a family of quarter-turn rotational motion valves that are used in pipelines to shut-off flow. It is often said that butterfly valve can regulate flow, but its not recommended doing this, as it can damage the valve disk and have a negative effect o the sealing properties. They are used in variety of process media and industries especially in water supply, collection, and distribution, as well as pumping stations, and have a broad range of uses especially in flow isolation.
ADVANTAGES
- Lightweight and compact
- Low maintenance requirement
- Quick operation, requires less time to open or close
- Low cost
- versatile
DISADVANTAGES
- throttling service is limited to low differential pressure
- cavitation and choked flow are two potential concerns
- corrosive and viscous fluid may cause deterioration of disc and cause loss of sealing pressure
COMPONENTS OF BUTTERFLY VALVE
Body: Butterfly valves generally have bodies that’s fixed between two pipelines using flange couplings

Shaft: The disc/plate, lever and nut are assembled to this shaft

Disc: The flow closure member of a butterfly valve is the disc. The disk is equivalent of a plug in a plug-in valve, gate in a gate valve or ball in a ball valve. Rotating the disk one-quarter turn or 90 degree opens and closes the butterfly valve

Retainer: Retainer is a kind of washer fixed on the body of butterfly valve

Lever: The hand-held lever is commonly used for small butterfly valves and is used to open and closed the valve. It is capable of being locked into a position of open, partially open or closed.

Nut: It is fixed at the end of shaft to keep the lever and retainer on position relative to the body of butterfly valve

ASSEMBLY
After modelling all the individual parts of the butterfly valve, all parts are assembled together in the assembly workbench of NX.

CONCLUSION
The butterfly valve is successfully designed and GD&T is applied to all the different parts and the assembly of the butterfly valve.
