Week 12 Challenge

Aim – Foundation is the main support of any structure, which transmits loads to earth. In case of bridge the structure faces many challenges and finally it goes to earth through its foundation. So foundation is the important part of a bridge and it should be designed properly. Well foundation is for most critical situation. When the liquefaction level is deeper, soil property is not good enough for safe bearing capacity and water current is hazardous well foundation is the choice of designers.

Especially in this challenge is to determine various types of loads and forces acting on the pier and design considering various conditions and loading criteria.

IRC: 6, IRC: 78, IRC 112 and IS 2911 are followed by designers.

Question 1) What is difference in active and passive earth pressure.

Active pressure - When the earth exerts a force on a retaining system and the members of the system tends to move toward the excavation calls active earth pressure.

Ka is the active earth pressure coefficient.

Passive pressure - When the retaining system exerts a force on soil under some condition calls passive earth pressure.

Kp is the passive earth pressure coefficient.

Question - 1 Design a well foundation for pier.

Ans - As follows

Question 2) Calculate the steel in steining and kg/cumec (poundage) for all other components of well foundation.

Ans -

Make Sketches showing cross section and the steel Draw everything to the scale.
