Week 11 - Project - A pillar Design with Master Section

AIM:- To create A pillar plastic component using a Class A surface.

OBJECTIVES:-

  • To check the continuity of the Class A surface.
  • To create a tooling direction.
  • To perform draft analysis of the plastic component.
  • To create Class B and Class C surface using Class A surface and make a closed Body.
  • To create a Dog House considering the design guidelines.
  • To perform the Draft analysis on the final component.

A-Pillar:-

The naming system adopted for the pillars may have possibly originated from their shapes as seen from the sides. The A-pillar resembles the shape of the alphabet “A”.

Manufacturers provide the A-pillars on both sides of the vehicle. Manufacturers use strong steel alloys to make the A-pillar. Thus, it is to make it withstand a crash and meet safety standards. However, the vehicle’s roof and doors are the most expensive parts to carry out repairs. In addition, the blind spot occurs due to the blocking the driver’s vision by the A-pillar. So, some makers make the A-pillar slimmer and chamfered to decrease the blind spots. And, thus it improves the driver’s vision.

CLASS A:-

Checking the continuity of the A surface. As we can see, there are no black dots, meaning there are no gaps.

CLASS B:-

Class B surface is offset to 2.5 mm from the Class A surface. The gaps are covered with swept command.

CLASS C:-

I created the C surface by using swept command by Extracting the Class A surface and then using swept with a 90deg angle. After making the whole C surface I joined it and Extrapolated it from each side so that it intersects with the B surface. Then I trimmed the A+C Surface with B Surface.

FINAL JOIN:-

Joining all the surfaces Class A, B, and C. The surfaces are trimmed with each other and joined. After joining the surfaces then the surface is converted into a solid part using close body command in part workbench.

Doghouse Creation:-

  • By following the Design guidelines the Dog house is created.
  • The sketch is made by using the Master Section provided.
  • Then it is converted into a Close body.
  • The draft is provided according to guidelines 0.5 degrees and 1.5 degrees outside. Fillet is provided to the edges.

Conclusion:-

Hence the given A surface was drafted with B and C surfaces and the draft analysis was attached below.
