Week-11 : Discretization of 3D intake manifold using GEM-3D
Solution: Discretization of 3D intake manifold using GEM-3D
Question 1: Tutorial- single cylinder DI add case 2 with discretization length 0.1 mm for intake runner and compare with default case 1
- Parameters-Torque, BSFC, max cylinder pressure
- simulation time
Answer:
1cylDI-final (Location: Tutorials--> Modeling_Applications --> Engine_Performance --> 01 - 1cylDIorSI --> 1cylDI-final)

Case Setup: Discretization length: case1 - 40mm & case2 - 0.1mm.

Question 2: Explore tutorial no 2 (GEM3D) - “Building intake manifold from STL model”
Answer: This study involves simplifying a 3D CAD geometry into a 1D geometry. For this the 3D geom needs to be split and the flow needs to be assigned appropriately.
The process is as follows.

The Final 1D model looks like the image above.
The imported geometry will be visible in solid color as it needs to be split.

The Splitting of the geometry will be done as follows.

Post splitting, teh geometry needs to be converted into primitive models like straight pipes and pipes with bends. Further these pipes need to be assigned boundaries as shown.

Post applying the boundaries we need to align the pars to preserve the shape of initial geometry.

This concludes out conversion of 3D cad to 1D.
