Challenge

Week 11 Challenge

Ultimate aim is to create a safe sound strong sustainable bridge. In this challenge superstructure has been planned and fixed of 28m span (bearing to bearing). Substructure has two options, one is abutment having earth fill and another is having RE wall. Aim is to design Pile whose vertical capacity and horizontal capacity is known.

Introduction

This design note pertains to the design of abutment with elastomeric bearing.

Structural skew angle is 0o

The substructure consists of RCC wall type abutment and circular type on pile foundation. Following components of substructure and foundation are designed.

Loads

1.Dead load (Due to self weight of superstructure, substructure, foundation and soil weight)

2.Superimposed Dead load (SIDL) excluding wearing course due to crash barrier.

3.Superimposed Dead load (SIDL) due to wearing course.

4.Carriageway live load

5.Seismic Load

6.Wind Load

7.Earth Pressure

  1. Q) Design the pile of the below mentioned bridge, considering 28 m straight span. a.With abutment having backfill

Ans) For to retain back fill wall type abutment is recommended. Following is the procedure -

Q) Design the pile of the below mentioned bridge . considering 28 m straight span.

b.With abutment having RE wall.

Ans) Cirular type abutment taken in consideration as earth pressure is not effective on abutment. Rest process as follows-

Q) List out different components of pile foundations and calculate kg/cumec (poundage) steel quantity in the pile.

Ans) Component of pile foundation - Pile and pile cap

Q) Add the detailing of the piles steel to the scale.
