Week 11 Car Crash simulation

aim:To perform a car crash analysis using ansys workbench and perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body

Procedure :

open explicit analysis module in ANSYS workbench , select required materal for the operations.

1.Stainless Steel NL, the mechanical property of material is given below

2.Structural steel, the mechanical property of material is as below

Now close engineering data tab and upload geometry in spaceclaim,

as everything looks ok to proceed , we will close spaceclaim and open mechanical model,

expand geometry tab and rename component and assign the material

as given geometry is half , so we make symmetry region as given below

after this we will mesh the geometry using below seeting

for wall using tetrahedron element and patch conforming algorithm

for carbody we use triagles method, smoothing set as low, for quality, check mesh quality : yes , error

the statics of the elements are given below

no of node: 3127

No of element : 7388

element quality of the element are given below

for analysis setting , we give end time as 0.001

deployed a fixed support to back portion of the car body as shown in below

deployed displacement load to the back face of wall in z axis with the magnitude of 500 mm.

now list out required output from from solution and run for simulation

Picture:

Total Deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Temprature :

we use parametric test for other 2 cases we use 0.5 and 0.75 mm thickess of carbody thickness

Result :

Wall thickness 0.3 mm Wall thickness 0.5 mm Wall thickness 0.75 mm
Total deformation Maximum (mm) 1025.954671 1020.346191 1015.288064
Equivalent stress Maximum (Mpa) 12081.10274 12064.95189 12043.36934
Equivalent elastic strain Maximum 0.060902959 0.06081027 0.060687761
Temperature Maximum Degree celcius 898.478363 891.0243988 881.9859009

COnclusion :

From the above table we can conclude that the thickness increase for car body decrease the total deformation .

STress also reduces with the increase in thickness of the material.
